The internet has been around for some time since 1990, however there has been huge growth in the use of the internet in the U.K. from 1996 at a base of 4.12% to 2002 at a base of 64.82%. Since then the speed of growth has plateaued with a much more gradual increase to reach 91.61% at the beginning of 2014 and 92% at the beginning of 2015. These statistics and visual graph can be found at the following link:
It is interesting that the growth in internet usage in the U.S.A. and Germany has been very similar to that of the U.K.
The age profile of those using the internet can be found at the following link https://www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/itandinternetindustry/bulletins/internetusers/2016
We can see that virtually all people over 16 to 54 used the internet in the last three months, however there is decline in internet usage the older a person gets. Only 38.7% of people over 75 used the internet in the last 3 months.
As time goes on with new generations emerging we would expect internet usage in the U.K to reach 98.8% usage when the older generations have passed on.
